"I just screamed that there was a fire and went outside without shoes"

A 67-year-old man of Albanian origin has spoken to Swiss media following the tragedy in Switzerland, which left six people dead and five injured after a public transport bus burst into flames. He described the first moments when the flames broke out and how he had left his house without shoes to help.

"There was just flames everywhere," says 67-year-old Osman Ismaili, a pensioner who has lived in Kerzers for 35 years, whose apartment is adjacent to where the fire occurred.

Ismail was having dinner with his family when he suddenly saw the fire from the window. “I just screamed that there was a fire and ran outside without shoes,” he says.

What happened next was dramatic, he said. “I saw a man pick up a stone and break a window. A little later, a person managed to get free from the bus. His family had relatives on the bus. We still don’t know what happened to them,” Ismaili says through tears. And he concludes: “It’s just bad and sad.”

A public transport bus caught fire in the centre of Kerzers in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland, on Tuesday evening, leaving six dead and five injured. According to local media, it is suspected that a person threw a bottle of petrol and set himself on fire. However, there is still no official version of the serious incident.
