Austrian banking giant Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) secured its complete legal triumph today, as the much-discussed court ruling on Russian assets became final.

The Vienna Regional Court for Civil Matters has granted final approval (Court Sign-Off) allowing the bank to officially take ownership of the assets worth 3.2 billion euros of the company "Rasperia Trading", which was controlled by the sanctioned Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska.

This development marks the end of the four-week appeal period following the preliminary ruling in September. Since the Russian side did not file any objections, the ruling has taken full executive force.

For the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Raiffeisen manages to break the blockade of its capital in Russia, legally seizing the assets of a Russian entity on European soil.

The acquired assets include a strategic 24% stake in Austrian construction company Strabag SE, along with frozen dividends.

Now, Raiffeisen can move from theory to practice: the bank will immediately contact the Austrian regulator to officially unfreeze these shares and begin the process of selling them to collect the cash.

The reaction on the stock exchange and the counterattack from Moscow

The financial markets welcomed the news with great euphoria. Raiffeisen shares on the Vienna Stock Exchange rose by 4.80%, trading at highs of 57.05 - 58.80 euros per share.

Investors are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel for the banking group's frozen billions.

However, this battle remains an open war on two fronts. Almost in parallel with the Vienna ruling, a court in Russia has hit the local branch of Raiffeisen with a reactive fine of 342 million euros.

This fine, requested by the same company "Rasperia", comes as retaliation for the way the bank has implemented European Union sanctions on the ground. While it has earned billions in Europe, Raiffeisen confirms that it remains stuck in a dangerous game of geopolitical "chess" with Moscow. ( Kapitali.al )
