The International Democratic Union (IDU) has reacted to the student protests in Albania, calling on the government and security forces to stop violence against protesters.
In the published statement, the IDU also calls for the announcement of early parliamentary elections.
In its response, the International Democratic Union expresses concern about the escalation of the protests, which began in Tirana on October 13 and, according to the statement, have spread beyond the capital.
Reaction:
The International Democracy Union (IDU) is deeply concerned by the escalating unrest in Albania, where student-led protests that began in Tirana on 13 October 2026 have now spread beyond the capital. The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are cornerstones of any democratic society.
IDU calls on the Government of Albania and its security forces to refrain from using violence against protesters, to exercise maximum restraint and proportionality, and to respect the fundamental rights of every citizen.
Reports of rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades being used against crowds composed mainly of students are alarming. Any cases of excessive force must be investigated independently and transparently, and those responsible held accountable.
The concerns raised by Albania's youth deserve a sincere response, not disregard. Attributing a broad movement of students and citizens to foreign intervention does nothing to address the grievances that have brought them to the streets.
The depth and breadth of public discontent now make it clear that a lasting solution must come from the Albanian people themselves.
Therefore, IDU calls on the Rama government to announce early parliamentary elections, conducted in a free and fair manner, with full respect for media freedom, an independent election administration and unrestricted access for international observers, including the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
The future of Albania lies on a democratic, prosperous and European path. IDU stands with the people of Albania in their aspiration for accountable government, the rule of law and a future of opportunity in the country.
