As today's protest in Tirana enters its sixth day, the European Parliament's rapporteur on Albania, Andreas Schieder, has expressed his concern about the violence exercised by both protesters and police, while calling for an immediate halt to the escalation between the two sides.

"As the European Parliament's rapporteur for Albania, I am particularly concerned about the situation in Tirana and call for an immediate halt to the escalation," Schieder writes.

Andreas Schieder's full reaction:

Across Europe, young people are taking to the streets, from Paris and Berlin to Tirana. They are fighting for better education and equal opportunities for all.

This is right and necessary, and should prompt governments to reconsider their approach. Education is our most important investment in the future and should never depend on the financial means of parents.

However, violence is never a solution, whether it comes from violent individuals infiltrating protests or from the state and police.

As the European Parliament's rapporteur for Albania, I am particularly concerned about the situation in Tirana and call for an immediate halt to the escalation.
