Vincenzo Montella risks sacking in Turkey
World Cup elimination expected to bring changes to Turkey's bench

Istanbul dreamed of big nights at the World Cup, but Turkey's adventure ended in deep disappointment after just two matches. Defeats to Australia and Paraguay have cost coach Vincenzo Montella dearly, and his future in charge of the national team seems sealed.

After the final group stage match against the USA, Montella is expected to return to Turkey and step down as coach. It is not yet clear whether he will resign on his own or be dismissed by the Turkish Football Federation.

Turkey's performance at the tournament has fallen short of expectations. The team arrived in North America with high ambitions, but after the first two matches they have failed to score a single goal.

Even against Paraguay, where they played most of the game with one more player after Almiron's red card, the team failed to change its fate.

However, this Turkey's cycle seems to have only just begun. Many of the team's greatest talents are still in the early stages of their careers, such as Kenan Illdiz and Arda Gyler, and expectations are that this generation will return stronger on the international stage, perhaps as early as the next European Championship.

One thing seems certain. That won't happen with Vincenzo Montella on the bench. The Italian coach's career with the Turkish national team appears to be over.

The Turkish Football Federation has not yet decided on his successor, but rumors are circulating in Turkey that a name with a lot of experience and authority like Fatih Terim could be one of the options to restore stability.

For Montella, however, other opportunities may open up. Despite the failure at the World Cup, the Italian continues to have admirers in Turkey.

A return to Fenerbahçe is not ruled out, as the Istanbul club is still looking for a coach and Montella could be a candidate to replace Domenico Tedesco, who has left for Bologna.

But first, Montella must try to end his adventure with Turkey with dignity, in the final match against the USA.
