Paraguay moves even closer to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Turkey by a narrow 1-0 score in their Group D match.

The Latin Americans managed to maintain the advantage despite playing the entire second half with one less player, while the loss sealed the Turks' elimination from the tournament.

The match started in the best possible way for Paraguay. Just 65 seconds after the first whistle, a Turkey pass error was capitalized on by Matías Galarza, who fired a powerful shot from distance and beat goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır to make it 1-0.

Turkey responded and created several good chances. Arda Güler tried with a shot over the crossbar, while Mert Müldür came close to equalizing in the opening minutes of the first half when his header from a free kick was stopped by fate, hitting both the crossbar and the post.

Just before half-time, the game took an unexpected turn. Miguel Almirón was sent off, leaving Paraguay with 10 men for the entire second half.

With the numerical advantage, Turkey exerted constant pressure after the break but failed to find the net. Deniz Gül, Can Uzun and Merih Demiral wasted the best chances, while goalkeeper Orlando Gill was decisive with his saves.

Despite dominance and the large number of chances created, Vincenzo Montella's team suffered their second consecutive defeat in the group and lost any chance of qualification.

Meanwhile, Paraguay took three very important points and is significantly closer to the next stage of the tournament.
