Argentine presenter Florencia Peña,  who spread the fake news that Leo Messi's father had passed away, has reportedly resigned from the television station she worked for.

Florencia Peña made a false report during the presentation of the show " El Show del merano ", where on Thursday she stated that according to sources it is learned that Jorge Messi has closed his eyes forever.

"I don't want to spread bad news, but Leo Messi's father has died," the presenter said.

As soon as the news made the rounds on the internet, there was a lightning reaction from Messi's family.

They denied the report, saying that Jorge has been diagnosed with an illness but has not died.

"He is receiving the necessary medical treatment and his condition is improving," the footballer's family said, according to ESPN.

Following the reaction of Messi's family, the presenter claimed that she had been given unverified information about Messi's 68-year-old father and had spread it hastily.

"I must clarify that this false information was given to me live on air as if it had been verified by the show's production team and I believed it," Peña wrote on Instagram Story on Thursday.

It is learned that she recently resigned due to the current situation.
