TRAGIC in Italy/ Fan bus attacked with stones in Italy, driver dies

One person was killed when unknown assailants attacked a bus carrying fans of the Italian basketball team Pistoia, and the search for the perpetrators is underway, Italian media reported today.

A 65-year-old bus driver was killed when he was hit by a brick thrown at the vehicle, TV Rai reported.

The incident occurred last night on the highway between the cities of Rieti and Terni, after the match between Estra Pistoia and RSR Sebastiani Rieti, when a bus carrying fans was pelted with stones and other objects.

The brick shattered the windshield and killed one of the two drivers.

During the match, which was won by the Pistoia team, there was a conflict between two groups of fans for reasons that have not yet been determined.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the attack on the bus unacceptable.

"This is terrible news that has left us speechless. The attack on the Pistoia fans' bus, which cost the life of one of the drivers who was hit by a brick, is an unacceptable and senseless act of violence," Meloni wrote on the social network.

She expressed condolences to "the victim's family and support to all those who were eyewitnesses to this tragedy."

"I believe that those responsible for this cowardly and criminal act will be quickly identified and brought to justice," Meloni added.

The Pistoia club administration stated that it was shocked by the attack on the bus with fans returning after the match and sent its condolences to the family of the driver who died.

Rieti's mayor, Daniele Sinibaldi, described the incident as a shocking criminal act.

"The entire community of Rieti condemns this despicable act, which has nothing to do with our city or sport," he said.

The Minister of Sports and Youth, Andrea Abodi, also condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms.
