Inter-Milan, 20 years later. History repeats itself in the Champions League as the two Milan sides find themselves in the semi-finals for a derby that will allow only one of the two to (re)embrace Istanbul. A crossover for many fans brings to mind what happened in 2003.

Many social networks have published the photo of Marco Materazzi and Rui Costa leaning on each other as the stadium is occupied by smokers.

But the match could not reach the end. In the 73rd minute, a great increase of Interista fans erupted. "There were only 200-300 ordinary lunatics" - will later say the chief of police of Milan, Paolo Scarpi, accused of not handling the situation as it should have been. The cause was a disallowed goal for Cambiasso in the 71st minute who managed to beat an incredible Nelson Dida.

Referee Merk saw a foul by Cruz on the Rossoneri defender at the moment of a cross from the corner. That was the spark that ignited the frustration at San Siro. Everything fell like rain on the field creating a surreal atmosphere from the thick smoke. Among the many thrown objects were several smoke bombs, rockets, fireworks, one of which hit Dida, who fell to the ground.

The match could not continue. The teams were called to the locker room. The Champions League game was suspended for 25 very long minutes, unleashing the fury of the hooligans. Reconciliation was then attempted, but it seemed futile. A few moments after Milan and Inter returned to the field, the situation flared up again. The race was eventually suspended. The chapter of the match was closed to open that of the symbolic photo of that evening. The image was captured by photographer Stefano Rellandini.

“I moved aside with my camera in search of a good photo. We spend a lot of time watching football matches. It's cold, it's raining. There is a long queue before the match to get the best seats on the pitch. It's a stressful job. More precisely, no one will know about our work. Often they are considered routine images", - he would remember years later.

"To be honest, my idea was to have an Inter player and a Milan player together. I took some pictures because Materazzi was very close to Rui Costa looking at the smoke. We photographers are always afraid that someone might have a better photo than yours. And in the Champions League there are a lot of photographers on the field, so you know you have a great photo, but you can't be 100% sure that yours will be the photo of the match," he said.

"When Materazzi suddenly put his arm on Rui Costa's shoulder for a few seconds, I saw... bam! A few shots, no more than three. As soon as Materazzi put his arm on my shoulder, I thought: "This is the picture". And so it was. Because from that moment the Euroderby match turned into the "derby of shame", but also into the photo derby of Materazzi and Rui Costa, symbolic players of that Inter and Milan" - he says.
