For 4 years he has been the most famous unemployed coach in the world: What does
Zinedine Zidane

It's been four years since we last saw Zinedine Zidane sitting on the bench of a football team. Although he has always been mentioned by several clubs, Zizou has never had real, direct contacts to return to coaching.

But what is Zidane doing today?

He left Real Madrid for the second time on May 27, 2021, after a season that did not bring any trophies to the club's hall: in an open letter he explained that his departure was due to a rift with the club and president Florentino Perez, citing a lack of support and clear direction from the management. He stressed that he was not tired of training, but he felt that the club no longer had the same trust in him as in the past. That moment marked the beginning of a period of rest that has now lasted for more than four years.

His name is proposed again every time a bench of a great one of the Old Continent falls, but the 1998 Ballon d'Or winner has expressed several times his desire to become France coach, a dream that could come true after the 2026 World Cup thanks to the already announced departure of Didier Deschamps.

According to the latest transfer news, in May Zidane rejected a pharaonic offer from Saudi club Al-Hilal of over 100 million euros for a single season, but at this moment his attention is reportedly focused outside the football fields.

Investments and entrepreneurial life

Zinedine Zidane has invested in expanding his network of “Z5” sports centers, dedicated in particular to padel and mini-football. In Toulouse, near the Franco-Spanish border, he is building a new center with 13 padel courts, two mini-football courts and one for beach volleyball, which is expected to open in early 2026. Other centers are already operational in France, Italy (including one in Turin) and soon in Spain.

The former Real Madrid coach maintains a select but influential presence in the world of football and sport in general: he participates in events related to FIFA and UEFA. In addition, Zizou has become a shareholder in the French club Rodez Aveyron Foot, a Ligue 2 reality.

In addition to his entrepreneurial activities, Zidane continues to keep himself in shape, plays sports regularly and spends time with his family, also following his sons' footballing journeys (one of his last documented public appearances is in Granada where his son Lucas plays).

Zidane and the France bench: "It's a dream"

Zinedine Zidane's dream for years has been to manage his country's national team. He has never hidden it and said it himself during an Adidas event he attended: "I think I have the cards in order to manage the French national team, where I played and spent practically twelve, thirteen or fourteen years as a player. Of course, it's a dream, I can't wait."

Real Madrid, the club where he excelled as a player and where he achieved the feat of winning three consecutive Champions Leagues as a coach, was his last coaching assignment, but he has not managed a team since 2021. He was linked with PSG, but the arrival of Luis Enrique erased any possibility.

Zizou is not one of those who runs behind the bench and counts offers, but he seems to have clear ideas: he only wants to train in contexts that make him feel safe and now he seems determined to wait for France to crown his dream.

Will this really be his next stop? Many thought that his chance to lead the transalpines would come after the 2021 and 2024 European Championships, but Didier Deschamps has always remained in his place: the current coach made it official a few months ago that his adventure will end after the 2026 World Cup and in France they are sure that Zidane will be the favorite to replace him. We will soon find out.
