The chief executive of Monza, Adriano Galliani, has indicated that the footballer Pablo Mari was stabbed in the back and has a "pretty deep wound", but his injuries are not life-threatening.

"Pablo Mari had a rather deep wound on his back, which fortunately did not affect vital organs such as the lungs or others. His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly, " Galliani told Sky Italia.

Galliani said that the footballer, who is 1.93 m, had "saved" because of his height and that at the time of the knife attack in the supermarket he had his son in the shopping cart.

"He told me about this incredible incident. Pablo had his son in a stroller and his wife by his side. He didn't notice anything. Then he felt a pain in his back, apparently caused by the criminal's knife. Unfortunately, he also saw the criminal who stabbed someone in the throat. He saw everything that happened and it was worrying," Galliani said.

Mari is being treated at the Niguarda hospital and told Galliani he wants to return to training on Monday.

On Twitter, Galliani wrote: " Dear Pablo, we are all here with you and your family, we love you, keep fighting as you know how, you are a fighter and you will recover quickly ". The coach of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, said that Mari "is fine".

"I know that Edu (the club's technical director) has been in contact with his relatives," Arteta said after Thursday's 2-0 defeat at PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

"He's in the hospital, he seems to be fine."

Arsenal released a club statement on Thursday night: “We are all shocked to hear the terrible news about the knife attack in Italy, where several people have been hospitalized, including our on-loan centre-back Pablo Mari. We have been in contact with Pablo's agent, who has told us that he is in hospital and is not seriously injured. Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this terrible incident."

One person has died and at least five others have been injured, some of them seriously, after a knife attack in a supermarket. The supermarket cashier, 30, lost his life after a man started attacking people in Assago.

The suspect of the attack, a 46-year-old man, has been arrested. The police have ruled out any terrorist motive, while the causes of the incident are unknown. It is suspected that he had mental health problems and took the knife from one of the supermarket shelves.

The man started stabbing people at random around 6:30pm local time at a local mall.

Screams were reportedly heard inside the center as terrified customers tried to flee in panic. The attacker was reportedly stopped by some customers and handed over to the police who arrived at the scene.
