"I left by boat to Italy, there were 53 of us"! The story of
Gentjan Asllani and his son, Kristjani

The best players in the world have always come out of… nothing! If you see for a moment the best names in the history of football and their past, it is well understood that to reach the top, you must be mature prematurely from the stresses of life. And the moment you have not gone through any difficult moments, then the parents, the first counselors of your formation, must educate with the right spirit.

Here we come on stage with Kristjan Asllani. Well-known figures of Empoli and Italian football have expressed that in addition to the qualities that this player possesses, he has impressed him because of his humility and simplicity. Where does it come from? Simple, family. "Sport Ekspres" has interviewed Kristjan's father, Gentjan Asllani, after his son signed with Inter.

What immediately stood out was his simplicity, so much so that it did not look like the boy had signed them for Inter, but as if he had been made official in a Serie B team. he dares to utter a good word for his son, he always leaves the appreciation to others. We find ourselves so easily because the history of their family and the way of communication they have, is that of every working Albanian, normal and who has faced many difficulties.

But there is still no room for complaints, not even after a boat trip to Italy and the fact that when Asllani was born, his father was not there, but had gone to Italy for a better life. "Other Albanians have suffered more, I had some bases, my cousins welcomed me and I will never forget their honor", says Gentjani. Undoubtedly, in this interview, the education of this young man who today touched the top of European football is very well understood. When Italy was pushing Asllani to play for their national team, it was in vain, they had chosen the wrong target.

Gentjan, we want to convey the wish of all Albanians for your son. Let’s start the interview with your early memories, how did the transition to Italy come about?

I want to thank you too, all of you for the many messages. The departure was like all other Albanian emigrants. I am originally from Mollas. I saw that many Albanians were fleeing, some to Greece and others to Italy. I had a job with a van, but when I saw that everyone was leaving, then I convinced myself that it was time to leave.

Then, your departure to Italy was by dinghy or not?

Yes, by dinghy and like all other Albanians, Vlora-Lecce. There were 53 people in dinghies and we landed in an hour and 20 minutes. I left for Italy on December 23, 2001. I first went to Rimini where I worked in construction. Then I was in Pisa and in 2004 I took my family to Italy. When I left for Italy, the bride was pregnant. I found 16-month-old Kristjan when I came back, because he was born in March 2002. Imagine the feeling of a father not seeing the baby when he is born and when he comes back he finds it standing. Not me, but every other parent would have a lot of emotions and experiences.

Were you afraid of the way things would go, about your life or even about the family that was back in Albania?

To be honest, then I was not afraid at all. Not only was I not afraid, but I was happy because Italy was seen as a big dream. Now when you turn to him and think again, it's another thing.

Great difficulties in the first days or not?

Not so much in fact, other Albanians have suffered even more. It is not that I have suffered to such an extent to say the least. I had my cousins who guaranteed me a home in Italy and a job. We continue to have very good relationships together and I will never forget the honor they did me. It did not take long and in 2002 the law on documents was opened and I took advantage at that moment, to do the paperwork.

How difficult was it to respond to Asllani's requests to become a footballer?

Ah, that has been the hard part. Asllani came to Italy at the age of two. He started his career at the age of 5 in a village called Buti. I enrolled the boy in a place where they were 1 year older than him. Rather to engage in sports activity, not to become a footballer and pursue a career. From the beginning, it was Fiorentina that moved me to one of its academies. Empoli would come later. In the same village we had the former Empoli defender, Francesco Pratalin. I asked him for advice on how I should deal with the boy and he suggested Empoli to me. Since the age of 7 and a half and until now, my son has passed all the age groups of Empoli. Now the big difficulties were in the training schedules. I was at work, the woman too. Sometimes it was the cousins who sent him, and when they could not,

When was the moment you said, "Yes, Christian will go far"?

No, I did not express it and I never did. Everyone was telling me he was going to go away, I was not saying anything. I did not even believe that we would get this far. Yesterday I also believed the story with Inter, until the contract was signed. Inter loved him for some time, but this story caught me unprepared, I could not think and we looked at each other stunned. But I must point out that Albanians are very respected at Empoli. At the Empoli academy they have great respect for Albanians and I have seen this for myself. Elseid Hysaj and his father left a good mark there. I even give advice to other parents to send their sons to the Empoli academy as they have a very special respect for us Albanians.

Beyond football, how would you describe your son?

He is calm, wise, hardworking. I can never stay without training. He never feels the pressure. In his beginnings when Empoli's first team was activating a bit, I was very happy with 5 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Kristjani told me that he had no problem at all, he wanted to play for 90 minutes. So I felt the pressure from outside, he himself did not.

To close with the Albanian National Team. Has there been any real interest from Italy and have you ever been hesitant about your choice?

Kështu do të bashkohej sërish me Kombëtaren. / Sport Ekspres /
