The president of the World Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, called on Russia and Ukraine to maintain a month-long ceasefire during the World Cup.
Speaking at the summit of the group of the most industrialized countries, the G20, Infantino said the World Cup provides a "unique platform" for peace and unity because the event will be watched by around 5 billion people on television.
"So my plea to all of you is to hold a truce for a month, as long as the World Cup lasts," Infantino said in Bali, Indonesia.
"You are the world leaders. You have the ability to influence the course of history," he said.
The World Cup starts on Sunday in Qatar.
This country has faced great criticism, due to suspected violations of human rights, especially of the workers who built the stadiums.
The head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, has called on countries to send athletes to Qatar based on their sporting merits, not on politics.
"We need the participation of all athletes who accept the rules - even if their countries are in conflict," said Bach.
Various international sports organizations have imposed sanctions on Russia and its athletes, after the invasion of Ukraine.
