FBI arrests Portland coach and Miami Heat star in NBA betting scandal

The new NBA season has just begun, but the league has been rocked by a major scandal that affects its integrity.

Two prominent figures in American basketball, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, have been arrested and placed under federal investigation for involvement in illegal gambling activities.

The news has been confirmed by major international agencies such as AP and Reuters, citing sources close to the investigation.

The investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), began after reports of unusual betting activity dating back to March 2023. The incident that sparked suspicions is related to a game between the Charlotte Hornets, the team Rozier played for at the time, and the New Orleans Pelicans.

Several betting platforms recorded a strange increase in bets predicting a poor performance by Rozier in points, rebounds and assists.

In less than an hour, a professional bettor placed thirty bets totaling $13,759, forcing several bookmakers to close bets on Rozier. Coincidentally or not, he withdrew from the game after just ten minutes due to a suspected foot injury.

According to ESPN and Sports Illustrated, the NBA had opened an internal investigation in 2023, during which Rozier cooperated fully with authorities and the league, even participating in several briefings with FBI representatives.

At the time, no violations were found and he was cleared of any charges. However, according to the latest sources, authorities have uncovered new evidence linking the player to a vast network of illegal betting, which allegedly also involved coach Chauncey Billups.

Their arrests were made on Wednesday evening, while the federal prosecutor and FBI Director, Kash Patel, are expected to hold a press conference on Thursday afternoon, October 23, where they will reveal new details about the investigation and possible charges.

Currently, neither the NBA nor the respective clubs have issued full statements, but sources close to the league have confirmed that an official response is being prepared.

This scandal has reopened the debate over the increasingly complex relationship between professional sports and the sports betting industry in the US.

With the legalization of betting in many countries, bets on individual player statistics (“prop bets”) have become increasingly common, increasing the risk that insiders can illegally influence results or performances.

The federal investigation is expected to have broad implications not only for Rozier and Billups, but also for how the NBA and other leagues will monitor athletes' relationships with the betting industry in the future.

Pending new developments, this remains one of the most serious scandals to have engulfed the NBA in the last decade, calling into question the transparency and ethics of one of the most powerful sports leagues in the world.
