Sensational / China suspends purchase of Russian oil

Chinese state-owned oil companies have suspended purchases of Russian oil by sea after the United States imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil, Moscow's two largest oil companies, sources told Reuters exclusively.

Refiners in India, Russia's biggest buyer, are also preparing to sharply cut oil imports from Moscow to comply with U.S. sanctions. A sharp drop in demand for oil from Russia's two biggest buyers would hit Russia's oil revenues and force the world's biggest importers to seek alternative supplies and push up global prices.

China's national oil companies PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC and Zhenhua Oil will refrain from trading Russian oil from the sea at least in the short term due to concerns about sanctions, the sources said.

The European Union has added two Chinese refineries with a total capacity of 600,000 barrels per day, including Chinaoil Hong Kong, a trading arm of PetroChina, to its sanctions list against Russia, Reuters reported earlier on Thursday.

The two refineries are Liaoyang Petrochemical and Shandong Yulong Petrochemical. The sanctioned plants account for 3 percent of China's refining capacity of 19 million barrels per day.
