It's been more than 12 years since Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher's life-changing skiing accident. He hasn't been seen in public since 2013, and his condition remains one of the sport's best-kept secrets. His family has maintained a strict privacy, sharing only minimal details about his health.

On December 29, 2013, while skiing in Méribel, France, Schumacher hit his head on a rock after losing control. Although he was wearing a helmet, it was cracked by the force of the impact. He suffered severe brain damage and was airlifted to hospital, where he underwent two emergency operations. Doctors at the time described his condition as “critical” and “fighting for his life.”

In April 2014, the family announced that Schumacher had shown signs of “consciousness and awakening.” By the summer, he was no longer in a coma and was transferred to a rehabilitation center. A few months later, he returned home, where he continues to be cared for by specialized staff 24 hours a day.

Updates on his condition are rare. Various neurological experts have suggested that Schumacher is unable to lead an active life and that he has difficulty communicating. Court documents describe him as "partially incapacitated" and in constant need of care, the Daily Mail reports.

It is said that he communicates mainly with his eyes and that only a very small number of people are allowed to visit him - among them Jean Todt, Ross Brawn and Gerhard Berger.

This year, three people were convicted of attempted blackmail, demanding £13 million in exchange for stolen photos, videos and documents of Schumacher. In addition to hundreds of images and videos, medical records were also stolen. Police recovered almost everything except a missing hard drive.

His wife, Corinna Schumacher, has vowed to protect his privacy at all costs, insisting that his condition not be abused and his dignity preserved./ KosovaPress
