The long-awaited debut of Modric came against Chelsea. A difficult start and an even worse finish. However, the messages from the Croatian were positive, if a little ambiguous. On the eve of the season, where Allegri has given the green light for performance, the main question remains: who will be the starting lineup?
Modric's role is key. In London he came in for Ricci, taking his place. So will Modric be the focal point of the midfield, the pure "director", with Fofana next to him to work hard? The most complicated decisions are in midfield, where combinations like Ricci, Modric and Jashari seem difficult to materialize for physical and tactical reasons.
For this reason, during the preparations there has been a lot of space for players like Loftus-Cheek and Musah, who, at the moment, do not have a secure future at the red and black club. The style of play that Allegri prefers; organized defense and fast counterattack, requires their power and speed, as well as the technicality of Jashari, Ricci and Modric.
The Milan we've seen so far is a team that looks to break free of the pressure and find the striker immediately. Leao, capable of exploiting the spaces in the final 35 metres, and the central striker who connects the teams, are essential for this style of play.
In the end, it seems that the starting midfield is not yet clear. Modric will have his space, the experience he brings is essential for the balance of the team. Jashari will be undisputed; Ricci and Fofana will alternate as needed, while Loftus-Cheek remains an important card for substitutions.
Pulisic, perhaps the most positive in the last season, risks having few minutes on the field in the 3-5-1-1 formation. He could alternate with Leao, but both are very important. Putting him in place of Saelemaekers is more difficult, although he could be used against more closed teams, as a replacement for Estupinian on the wing, but this will be a forced solution and not a permanent one.
In defense, with the arrival of De Winter, the formation with three center-backs is still under discussion. Tomori and Pavlovic seem to be the starters, while Gabbia and the former Genoa player will fight for the last place in this department. Of all of them, Gabbia seems the most prepared to lead the defensive line.
The answers will come soon, on August 17th in the Coppa Italia against Bari, where the serious work will begin and we will better understand what awaits us this season with Milan.
