Unexpected/ Gareth Bale announces his retirement from football

The captain of Wales, Gareth Bale, has announced that he has finished playing football. At the age of 33, Bale says he will no longer play football for either Wales or the Los Angeles club in the USA.

Part of Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and Los Angeles Galaxy, Bale has won 22 trophies, the vast majority with Real Madrid, including five Champions League titles.

" After careful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football. I feel extremely lucky to have realized my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The result highest in 17 seasons, which will be impossible to repeat, regardless of what the next chapter has in store for me ," the 33-year-old initially said.

Then Bale showed his gratitude for the clubs he has played for, while holding the captain's armband for 111 times with Wales.

" From my first contact at Southampton to my last with LAFC and everything in between has shaped a club career that I have immense pride and gratitude for. To play and captain 111 times for my country has been truly a dream come true. To express my gratitude to everyone who has played their part in this journey is impossible. I feel indebted to many people who helped me change my life and shape my career in a way I could never have dreamed of when I first started at the age of 9 ," Bale said among others.
