The coach of the Albanian National Team, Silvinjo, gave a television interview where he talked not only about the last matches of the Reds and Blacks, but also about his experience in Albania, participation in the European Championship and the future of football in our country.
What went wrong in the match with Georgia?
A loss. Yes, yes true, unfortunately. The stadium was full and our expectations were quite good to win, maybe even draw.
It's the first loss after a year and a half, it's even the first goal we've conceded at the "Air Albania" stadium, and I'm sorry for that, but everything happens in football. However, the footballers gave their best.
In football there are losses, there are victories, of course we have had a positive balance so far, but the problem was that the team could not react...
It didn't take much understanding, it was obvious. Yes, it was a very difficult match and I stated this in the press conference after the match.
All the teams in the group are strong, but it is a physically strong team and well aligned from a tactical point of view, a team where everyone penetrates and it becomes difficult, they don't give almost any space to the opposing team. In my opinion it should have been a draw.
After the score 1 to 0, the team did not react, did not manage, did not have the strength to react. Missing players or was it intended that way?
No, but that's a football match, a tough game, not an easy one at all. I think that if we had scored first, the match would have ended 1-0 in our favor.
It was difficult because both teams were tactically well aligned and strong.
Are you upset with the team, I mean just the game with Georgia?
No, I'm upset with myself, there are also losses, but I'll get over it anyway, after two days I'm calmer, I have nothing to say about the players, they gave everything there in the stadium.
In Germany, what is the most difficult moment you have experienced?
When I saw Italy overturn the score of the match in the space of 5 minutes.
Can't you do anything?
No, because Italy is a team that then shuts down, isolates itself in retreat, they are used to winning European and World championships, not just participating. There, half of the team won the title of champion in Serie A.
What was your reaction when you saw Bajram's goal?
I didn't see it. I had taken a glass of water, the match had just started. Sorry, but I didn't see it. I saw it later, I had taken the water, when it was Pablo, Ervin Bulku and they called goal, goal and I couldn't see it.
What was the most beautiful moment that gave you the most pleasure?
The match with Croatia. It looked like the game was closed, but they overturned the result, until the end we equalized, but the whole game of 90 minutes was played, I agree with that, for the win.
Mister, which country in Brazil do you come from?
Sao Paulo. Sao Paolo has everything, the whole world is in Sao Paolo. In terms of the similarity ratio between a Brazilian and an Albanian, we are similar.
Where are we similar?
I think character, we are similar, even in football, it is enough for us to win a couple of matches and we start saying that we are the best, we are on a good path, while a loss makes us shaky, we lose a little confidence, people who likes life, drinking coffee, talking, having dinner together, has many similarities like nature with Albanians.
I want to return to the European football championship in Germany. What do you think it was that didn't work right for us, apart from being in one of the most difficult groups not seen in previous European championships?
Yes, this is true. But, I think that after many months, three or four months, we have learned a lot, we have grown a lot as a Federation, footballers, staff, and myself.
I have the experience of a World Championship with the Brazilian National Team as an associate, of course in 2018 in Russia and for me these two championships are very close, of course the European Championship as the first coach was something extraordinary.
I think we did our best against Italy, Spain and Croatia in a very complicated and difficult group.
What happened in the match with Italy?
Yes, if we briefly return to the Euro 2024 championship, in the first game the team had a kind of psychological collapse, it is not easy at all, since you have to play in the European.
I remember it well as we watched all the EURO 2024 matches to learn more, it's not like we played properly against Italy either.
It is a matter of debut. The first debut is always difficult, as you are not used to playing matches at that level.
The European matches are different, the World Cup and the European are completely different, you can play qualifying matches, friendly matches, you can even go to Wembley to play with England, but the European and the World Cup are something completely different, something else.
Does Silvinho's Albania have a winning mentality?
We strive for this, I think the statistics are also. I think there is a limit that can be worked on, for example that we have a year and a half without losing at home, that we have not conceded a single goal.
I think this is important data.
Qualifying for the European Championship, when you only lose the first game against Poland, that means something.
When you win or draw, so you don't lose, I think that after that you slowly manage to change the mentality of the players. This is also part of the process and work.
What is changing in football? Is it becoming more global?
Even this, since technology has been helping for more than 10 years. We can see the opponent in all possible ways, the part of the attack, the defense, there is a lot of work to do, after each match it becomes even more difficult, but it is also true that there is a limit, a limit.
We know that Brazil, Argentina, Germany, England have very strong teams. But a match is 90 minutes.
I want to ask you, although it is difficult to answer: what do you think will be the future of Albanian football, even if you will be on the coach's bench or not, or someone else will come after you, are you optimistic right?
A lot! Without any doubt! With Silvinho or not, because he is already developed, he has advanced, he has made many transitions. Both the federation and the nation have seen the work done.
I don't know, I signed a contract, I don't know when, but another coach after me must come here to work, live here. Everything has changed.
Do you feel satisfied here?
A lot!
How do you feel when you hear discussions about players or the roster?
Good luck! I told the players, even in all the press conferences, when asked about the players, the player himself must understand that I don't have a personal opinion, when I put him in the national team, it's not that I like one more or the other less.
This is football, in the national team of Croatia, we are not dealing with a society that runs with 23 players all year.
I mean, I don't have a personal relationship with them, I have to take it upon myself whether or not to bring a player to the national team, then there are three million other people who say what should be done.
Do you know that Edi Reja also had problems with the players themselves. He did not agree, did not play them, left them on the bench, etc. Do you also have this problem?
We all have them, but we have to work. I heard Carlo Ancelotti yesterday in an excellent interview and he said: "I am always next to the players", and I agree with him, we must move forward.
This is an advantage, when you have players of an important level, fortunately I did, and it is not a problem for me, I go to the player and talk to him. We discuss, talk and grow and develop together.
How is your relationship with President Duka?
Very good with the Federation, with President Duka, he enjoys great respect from my side. No, I'm even more nervous than he is. Not at all.
We have a relationship of mutual respect, I respect him as President as he has been doing an excellent job for a long time, certainly in contact with me, with the staff. I live in Tirana because this is where you develop.
You are one of the first coaches living in Tirana. How do you feel in Albania?
Very good, I'm used to living here, eating well, delicious fish, crudo, you have wonderful cooking.
Have you traveled through Albania?
Yes. I went to meet and visit the President in Dhërmi. Very nice place. Exceptionally.
Did your family come to Albania?
My friend always. He likes it, very much, it is very good to live here, eat well, live well. The culture, the people who respect you, it's very nice here.
