Argentina-Algeria 3-0, Messi reaches Miroslav Klose's record

Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in the first match of the group stage (Group J) of the 2026 World Cup. All the goals were scored by captain Lionel Messi in the 17th, 60th and 76th minutes.

In his 200th official match for the reigning world champions, Messi equalled the World Cup record of 16 goals held by Germany's Miroslav Klose.

" It makes me very happy to have experienced everything that has happened to me in my life. What I am experiencing now is the icing on the cake ," Messi said after the match. " I am very happy and grateful for this wonderful group. I am enjoying every moment. "

" Having Leon is an advantage because of the way he leads the team and pushes it forward. Because of what he represents," explained Rodrigo De Paul. "He is not interested in individual records. He puts the team first and for us, that is something extraordinary. I have no words for Leon. What can I say? He is incredible ," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.
