Prime Minister Edi Rama has mocked American Democrats for their continued protests against the luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

In an interview with the German WELT, Rama said that the international attention to the protests in Albania is also related to what he described as "Donald Trump's long shadow."

"I told my Democratic friends in America: If you can't defeat Trump in America, don't come to Albania to take revenge. This is not right," Rama declared.

"The protests, which initially began against a tourism development project, have morphed into a broader movement against the government and have been ongoing for several months. The flamingo has become the symbol of the protesters, due to concerns raised about the project's impact on natural areas and bird habitats.

Opponents of the project have raised concerns about the environmental impact, transparency and lack of public consultation. The protests have also attracted attention outside Albania, while the issue has become part of the debate in European institutions.

On the other hand, Rama has defended the project and argued that it involves two different developments: one on the island of Sazan, public property, and the other in a private area.

The Prime Minister has also stated that negotiations on the project are ongoing and that the environmental impact will be assessed before a final decision is made," writes Politico.

Referring to protesters' slogans, such as "Albania is not for sale," Rama said that opposition to foreign investment should not be presented as selling the country.

"If you were to bring foreign capital into Germany, would you say that Germany is being sold?" he declared.

"I represent the interests of my country and I will continue to do so," the prime minister added.

Meanwhile, the ownership issue of a portion of the land associated with the project is under investigation by SPAK. The investigations are related to doubts about the ownership documentation, while the former land owner has denied any wrongdoing.

Rama has stated that the government will ensure full transparency for the project process and documentation.
