Thousands of citizens in Portugal are mobilizing to protest against the rising cost of living, in a wave of demonstrations that is sweeping several European countries. The housing rights movements have been joined by unions affiliated with the CGTP trade union confederation, which is demanding higher wages and pensions, improved public services and measures to deal with the economic crisis.

The protests are organized under the slogan: "Higher wages, pensions and better public services. Against the rising cost of living. A new course for Portugal!" Rallies are planned in the cities of Porto, Coimbra and Lisbon.

The cost of living crisis is weighing on families across Europe, with high prices, fuel costs and a lack of affordable housing. These issues have prompted citizens to take to the streets to demand intervention from the authorities.

A CGTP spokesman, speaking to SICN television in Coimbra on Saturday morning, stressed that rising prices are making it increasingly difficult for families to afford basic expenses.

In Porto, the march started at around 10:30 am from Praça da Batalha square and was scheduled to end at Praça D. João I, an area where protests against the housing crisis have been taking place all week.

One of the organizers of the protest in the city, Pedro Manuel, stated that the movement is supported by citizens of different political persuasions and is not institutionally linked to any party. According to him, the demonstrations are a reaction to the created situation and a way to demand change.

José Manuel Pureza, a representative of the Left Bloc, also told the Associated Press that the main issue the protesters are seeking to raise is the right to housing for all.

He pointed out the difficulties citizens face due to rising rents and mortgage costs, which are increasingly weighing on family budgets.

Protesters are demanding that the housing crisis and rising cost of living receive due attention from the authorities, while organizers have stressed that the demonstrations are taking place peacefully.
