At the press conference between Prime Minister Edi Rama, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, EU Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, in the framework of the twelfth meeting between the EU and Albania for the Council of Stabilization and Association, it has been stated that the Western Balkans can become the new entry point of energy for Europe. Varhelyi has stated that Albania will be the first to build a liquefied natural gas terminal.
During his speech, he expressed his happiness that it was possible to find funding for the Camp of the College of Europe in Tirana as he added that the admissions process will start in September of this year.
The Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement in the EU, Oliver Varhelyi, has stated that their wish is for the Western Balkan region to be part of the European Union as soon as possible.
Oliver Varhelyi: Europe is committed to the Western Balkans as its geopolitical priority. What we heard from Rama and his delegation is that Europe is a geopolitical priority. Even for us, the Balkans has geopolitical advantages. We want this region to be part of the EU as soon as possible.
In Albania we saw what we accomplished last year. Last year was very important for Albania. No time was wasted last year. Reforms move at a pace, we have requested a further acceleration of reforms. If all goes well, this year could be even more successful. Both parties benefit from Albania's progress, we get an ally who not only works with us, but also contributes with us.
It is very important to hold these meetings, where we not only talk about what has been done, but also what has been achieved. Progress is very good, reforms continue, we encouraged the prime minister to make more reforms in justice. We hope to see results in the fight against corruption. We encourage Albania to continue in this direction, for the progress in the membership talks. We also have obligations, the EU must be ready to keep its promises. We are doing this with the investment plan.
The Western Balkans can become the new energy entry point for Europe. Albania will be the first to build a liquefied natural gas terminal. We are discussing bringing in more gas, with the construction of that missing link. We also discussed the topics, the liquefied gas terminal for the Balkans because this is a major effort that must be realized. It will start for the Western Balkans region to grow faster, even faster than the EU because it has tremendous potential.
I am happy that we managed to find funding for the European College Camp here in Tirana. This is a clear signal that membership is close. I am very proud to announce that we will be able to start the admissions process in September of this year. We need a building and a beautiful place for the College to be located and we will provide the funding for it. I encourage them to continue their work and in the second half of this year we will have developments.
