The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee has approved by a vote of 19-3 the appointment of Eric Wendt as US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Albania. This is what Albanian Post learns through an official communication with the Committee's press office.
Wendt's nomination was supported by a majority of committee members, including senators from both major parties, in a vote that brings the nomination one step closer to final confirmation in the Senate.
According to voting records, 19 senators voted for the nomination, while 3 voted against. Among the votes in favor were well-known senators such as Risch, Ricketts, McCormick, Daines, Hagerty, Barrasso, Lee, Paul, Cruz, Scott, Cornyn, Shaheen, Coons, Murphy, Kaine, Duckworth and Rosen, among others.
After this approval in the committee, the candidacy is expected to go to a vote in the plenary session of the Senate, where his confirmation as the new US ambassador to Tirana will be finally decided.
If confirmed – it seems a matter of formality now – Wendt will take over the leadership of the US Embassy at a crucial period for US-Albania relations, particularly in the areas of security, investment and Euro-Atlantic cooperation.
