Speaking about the justice system, Prime Minister Edi Rama also focused on the high number of detainees.
Amid criticism, Rama said that Albania is the most scandalous country in the Council of Europe.
Specifying it with figures, he said that there are currently 4,492 people in Albanian prisons, while only 1,895 of them are convicted.
" Albania is the most scandalous country in the Council of Europe, I'm not saying this, but the figures that have alarmed the Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture. We're not just talking about SPAKU but about our entire system, about the way our justice system functions."
We are at the bottom of the list with a difference from the others for pre-trial detention, that is, for the imprisonment of people without trial, and the number of people who are currently in prison in Albania without having been convicted, which in the sense of the Constitution of the Republic of Albania and the European Convention on Human Rights, is greater than the number of those who are in prison convicted.
So these people are innocent according to the convention, but they are in prison.
You know how many of them there are, you don't, because the pot has the word prison, the word theft, the word thief, they have it like salt, pepper and sauce in every kind of dish. We have 4492 citizens in Albanian prisons. Can you believe that only 1895 are convicted. What is this? ", said Rama among other things.
