The government, lacking ideas, restores gambling, amnesty, selling citizenship
Prime Minister Edi Rama

As the opposition before 2013 knew well, a state grows and develops by improving the rule of law, strengthening transparency and competition in the market, and encouraging innovative businesses. Instead of old ideas, the government would do well to dust off its old commitments.

The last decade has confronted us with many initiatives, which have been thrown by the Government on the debate table. The initiatives have been among the most unusual for a country like Albania, starting from the legalization of cannabis, the "fiscal" amnesty, to the latest initiatives to bring back betting, or the sale of citizenship.

These initiatives have one element in common: they lead to a parasitic and exceptional economic model for a part of the population and business, even for the healthiest and most integrity part of it.

The country is facing an emigration at an alarming rate, the withdrawal of Western capital and a marked lack of foreign investment.

The lack of concrete reforms, the instability of the fiscal environment or the pronounced problems with the justice system and law enforcement, adding the fact of being a small and insignificant market, make our country not on the map of strategic investors. .

Not only that, but they also make the country unsafe for its own citizens, who are forced to migrate en masse.

Given the lack of will to reform and create an attractive environment for investment and capital, the government's focus is on "exotic" initiatives.

At the beginning of the summer, the government floated the idea of a "fiscal amnesty", which was more like a legal amnesty. The risk that Albania would turn into a safe haven for criminal money from the region and beyond caused a number of international organizations to react more harshly than ever before to the government.

Meanwhile, as we have explained in previous issues of the magazine, there were not a few voices in the country who explained that such an initiative is not a guarantee of development at all. On the contrary, they risk ultimately criminalizing the Albanian economy and politics.

On the other hand, these initiatives are also motivated by the permanent justification for the need to fill the state coffers. In 2022, in a deep lack of new sources of economic growth, the government is reverting to the dangerous idea that any type of capital, regardless of form or origin, is good as long as it pays a little tax, to have public resources to continue with their spending agenda.

A state grows and develops, improving the rule of law, strengthening transparency and competition in the market, and encouraging innovative businesses. Basically, this remains the utopian platform offered to the citizens of this country every time there are new elections.
