"Energy will cost the Albanian budget 500 million euros", Rama: the EU

At the final press conference in Belgrade, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama reiterated the importance of the "Open Balkans" regional initiative, describing the meeting in Serbia as the most important.

"I reiterate that yesterday was the most beautiful day of the Open Balkans, and it could have been a bad day. Instead of opening the doors to the people of work and production, we could have opened the doors to a bad news of tension and risk of war. Fortunately, the first happened, this is the choice we have made, to look forward, to get closer and understand each other as best as possible, and to solve the things we have to solve with patience, without forgetting the things for which we have to we cooperate", declared the prime minister.

Rama also mentioned the main problems that the leaders of the Balkans and the European Union in general must face in the coming months.

"This winter is likely to be the hardest we have encountered in years, there are plans in Europe that include turning off the lights after 10 o'clock, which means shutting down activities, just like during the pandemic, but this time for energy electric. We have discussed how we will cooperate, and there will be concrete steps. In Albania, we made a decision, I don't know if it's crazy, in order not to affect the price for family consumers and small businesses, we kept the price that was before the crisis appeared. But that means hundreds of millions of euros to cover the cost. The issue is how long this story will continue, while you can have the money, but not the energy, that's why these collaborations are made", were his words.

The help of the European Union is necessary, but the prime minister once again "stung" Brussels, inviting it not to repeat previous mistakes with the Western Balkans.

"I ask the EU not to do us the shame it did during the pandemic, when we were forced to look to China, and the EU leaders themselves have accepted it. We will ask the EU for extra support, the cost forecasts are staggering, for Albania they reach close to 500 million euros to maintain the system and continue the energy supply, I hope that the EU will listen to us and that we will be part of it", he declared. Rama, who added that one of the agreements has to do with the establishment of the Open Balkans Agency for Foreign Investments, which according to him will be the "umbrella" of the agencies of the participating countries.
