The Ministry of the Interior has submitted for public consultation the amendment of the law on the function of the District Prefect.
The changes propose expanding the powers of this institution, even giving it the power to propose the dismissal of the mayor to the minister responsible for local government.
According to the accompanying report of the draft law, the goal is to strengthen the role of the prefect, as a representative of the government in the district and coordinator in the interaction between the central and local governments.
The draft law also charges the prefect with tasks for monitoring the implementation of projects with funds from the central government until receiving reports every 10 days from the local leaders of the state police on the situation of order and public safety.
The necessity of legal changes, it is said in the report, strengthens the role of the Prefect in the district to enable services and governance as close as possible to the citizens.
The draft law was submitted for public consultation on October 26, while it is expected to cause debates regarding the extended powers of the prefect, especially the part where he proposes the dismissal of mayors in case they are found to be in serious violation of the Constitution.
