In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog highly appreciated the support that Albania has given to his country, in the war with Hamas, which has been going on since October of last year.
"The Israeli nation will never forget how you and the Albanian nation stood by Israel", emphasized Herzog, among other things.
"It is meaningful for me to be among friends at this painful time for Israel. We are approaching one year since Hamas brutally attacked Israel. Since that dark day in October, Albania has firmly placed itself on the right side of history. Your country showed once again that it stands by the Israeli country. Our work is not done yet, hostages are still being cruelly held in Gaza. Unfortunately, we are fighting more than terrorists at the same time. Albanians and Jews share a long and significant history. The Jews of Europe found refuge during the Holocaust in your country. We have a lot to learn from each other already. I am very pleased to be here. I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to discuss these here today. The Israeli nation will never forget how you and the Albanian nation stood by Israel."
While Prime Minister Edi Rama focused on the historical connection between Albanians and Israel.
"Our forefathers, whether Muslim or Christian, overcame all religious prejudices and defended the Jews, and not a single Jew surrendered to the Nazis. Albania became a country where, unlike other countries, Jews did not leave, but came to find friendship, shelter and protection. It is a history link that we will always be keen to strengthen. We will always continue to be steadfastly against any form of anti-Semitism", said Rama.
On the other hand, he said that Albania supports the ceasefire and any possible effort to save the hostages, but also to start a new process to bring peace to the region.
"We are aware that what is happening in the territories where the people of Israel and the people of Palestine live, is absolutely very serious and it is absolutely something that must end as soon as possible. We are well aware that this is easier said than done and that the war against terror is much more difficult than it may seem from afar. However, Albania has also been a strong supporter of the ceasefire and any possible effort to bring the hostages home and start a new process for the benefit of all people. I am very keen to point out that in the meantime these are very difficult times for Israel, its people and every people living in that corner of the world. The future will surely be the future of a stronger and more secure Israel," said Rama.
Prime Minister Edi Rama also extended an invitation to Israelis who want to rest or do business in Albania.
"We are here with open arms to welcome all Israelis who want to come, be they tourists, entrepreneurs, artists, writers. Be it people who deal with high technology or those who are of an older age who want to have their home here in the middle of Europe. The economic cooperation between the two countries has a tremendous potential to develop rapidly. The trends are very encouraging and visible, but we need to do more. "I am very happy to have the president here as a friend, not only as the president of Israel, but as an old friend who I knew a long time ago, when he was in the trenches of politics in Israel," said Rama.
This is the first visit of a President of the State of Israel to Albania.
