President Bajram Begaj decrees May 11 as the date of the 2025 parliamentary

Today the President of the Republic issued the decree for setting the date of the elections for the elections for the Assembly of Albania. The general election will be held on May 11, 2025.

For these elections, President Bajram Begaj had four Sundays available between April 15 and May 15, 2025.

The fundamental reason for setting the date of May 11, 2025 as the date for holding these elections lies in the need expressed by the CEC to use all the time available for the preparation of the legal and organizational infrastructure, in order to make it possible to vote successful and productive of Albanians from abroad.

The President of the Republic expresses his conviction that the major challenge of these elections is voting from abroad and the massive involvement of voters residing abroad in this essential process for democracy. All political forces have publicly expressed their determination to assist this process and to subordinate the election date to this priority interest. The President of the Republic fully joins and unequivocally respects this will.

The Democratic Party and a significant part of the parliamentary parties presented to the President of the Republic the concern that the planning of the 6th summit of the European Political Committee (EPC) for May 8 and 9, 2025, two days before the last possible date for conduct of the elections, forms an unacceptable influence and advantage for the government, as well as significantly violates the principle of equality of arms required by the Electoral Code for the election campaign.

Without questioning the permissibility or otherwise of such an activity, because this is the legal competence of the CEC, the President of the Republic joins in the position that the government's development of a meeting of this nature in the final of the election campaign, with the participation extraordinary European political leadership, cannot be without influence in setting the date of the elections.

For this reason, the President of the Republic, after making all the necessary verifications with the competent authorities of Albania, officially received assurances that the above activity will take place after the parliamentary elections, this fact confirmed for the President of the Republic by international interlocutors.

The official confirmation as above removes the reservation expressed by the Democratic Party and the rest of the parliamentary parties towards the date of May 11, 2025 and makes this date acceptable and agreeable to the entire political factor.

For these reasons, the President of the Republic decided to respect the request of the CEC and set the date of May 11, 2025 as the date for holding the elections for the Assembly of Albania.
