Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka held a press conference with the chief negotiator with the European Union, Majlinda Dhuka, with the theme Albania in foreign relations and the path of European integration 2022-2023.
Minister Xhaçka listed some of the most important foreign policy events of 2022, such as taking the mandate in the United Nations Security Council, the summit between the EU and the Western Balkans held in Tirana and the opening of negotiations.
During the conference, she was asked about an unusual announcement by the Foreign Ministry regarding the mandate of American Ambassador Yuri Kim.
"I believe that it does not require any great science to know when the mandate of an ambassador begins and ends, even more so for the one of the USA that has special attention and interest
We have not said anything more than what was actually said in the media even before this information became known to us, while this information has been in the ministry for a long time when the media knew and we made it public when it was exceeded this process by the ministry.
And at that moment when this information went beyond us to other institutions (that is, beyond the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) we started receiving phone calls and requests for information.
Under these conditions, we judged that it was the right place to cut off the rumors by clarifying that it was something that was happening regularly, it doesn't take much mind to calculate when the ambassador's mandate begins and ends, and it was judged that this process should not become dirty with conspiracy theories against the ambassador.
We have not commented on the US procedures nor the US candidates, it is not for us to discuss. We have put a lid on some rumors and hints that were being made.
I also understand the critics of this decision, but what I don't understand is that suddenly this decision or information provided by the ministry is described by the opposition as an attack on the US, on the US ambassador and an ambassador who is a US diplomat whom I trust that we owe him a debt of gratitude for the dedicated work he has done in deepening our strategic relationship...
The relationship has never been stronger and bigger than what it is today with the USA", answered Xhaçka.
She also announced new ambassadorial moves but without naming names.
Xhaçka announced again that the Summit of the Berlin Process will be held this year in Tirana.
"This year too, Albania leads the Berlin Process and will welcome this year's summit of the Berlin Process. The summits in Tirana in 2022 and 2023 are an expression of the strengthening of Albania's role in the region," said Xhaçka.
She announced that the opening of the Albanian embassy in Ukraine is expected.
When asked by the media, Xhaçka did not give any new position regarding her mandate as a deputy when she said that she has not violated the law, while she also announced when asked by the media that she is negotiating on a technical level with Greece for the agreement on the Sea.
For her part, the Chief Negotiator with the EU, Majlinda Dhuka, said that holding the EU-Western Balkans summit strengthened support for the gradual integration of the region into the EU based on merit.
"In 2022, the unanimous support of EU member states and institutions, giving the green light for the start of negotiations, marked a historical moment for the country, Albania, which opened negotiations on the basis of merit. He pushed forward the country's important reform agenda. Albania's visible progress was also confirmed in the EC report on Albania. The institutional structure has been strengthened and Albania has clearly made progress, according to the EC report. In 2022, the EU-Western Balkans summit was held in Tirana for the first time, which reaffirmed the importance of the strategic partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans as a region with a clear European perspective. He supported Albania's membership in the EU. He reaffirmed that the EU remains our closest partner. The summit strengthened support for the gradual integration of the region based on merit," said Dhuka.
