This December 2023, the Democratic Party turns 33 years since its foundation, a history of the Albanian transition. It was founded on December 11, 1990, the very night when political pluralism was announced in Albania.
There have been many enthusiastic and depressing events in the Democratic Party: exclusions, departures, separations, reconciliations, mergers, returns and comebacks... even raids. The final battle is for her seal.
33 years of history, come to "Inside Story" through authentic documents not published before, the confession of the founders of this party and the characters who have followed the political developments in Albania.
Former president Bamir Topi shows important details of his cooperation with Berisha, but also a conversation with former president Ramiz Alia that sheds light through the dark corridors of politics in December 1990, when the new elite was being designed.

Bamir Topi reveals the behind-the-scenes conversation with Ramiz Ali on how the elite of the 90s was formed
The former president, Bamir Topi, has another, more direct analysis.
He was not in PD in December '90 and does not take the version told by the founders for granted. He explains the beginning of the transition through a conversation he had with the last communist leader, Ramiz Ali. A rare conversation that in itself, today after 33 years, reveals a lot about the reality of the new political forces that were supposed to bring about change.
"In order to be rational, I want to tell you a random conversation with Ramiz Ali, starting from the light and shadows of that period, where many voices commented on how pluralism came to Albania, whether it came by itself or was induced, and he gave me an answer smart: At a reception I organized for a foreign personality, I introduced four party leaders, Fatos Nano, leader of the SP, former member of the APS, Sali Berisha, leader of the DP, former member of the Labor Party, Skender Gjinushi, Sabri Godo, I believe you have the explanation inside what you are asking me about, he told me", said the former president, Bamir Topi.
For the protagonists of December '90, the leaders of the new political elite, there was nowhere to be found except among the ranks of the APS.
But what was the mechanism that brought Berisha to the head of the party and his arguments for the free vote, that "he would be the first among equals".
"I dealt with the program with Gramoz Pashko and together with Genc Rulin we made the statute. We took three or four similar ones from Western countries and did it. In that version there was a point in which it was emphasized that the chairman of the party is elected only for a two-year term. The nine-person organizational group was assembled. There were seven since the foundation and then Berisha and Bardhyl Reson joined the group. they all came out against this proposal of this point. This point was changed and it became two years twice in a row, then this point was also broken and it became more and so on. There is the beginning of what people in Albania do not want to conceive of being non-eternal", said the founder of DP, Rexhep Uka.
