Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the traditional press conference given in the Greek media in the context of the Thessaloniki International Fair, was also asked about the issue of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who has been in prison since May 12 for vote-buying.
Greek media reports that Mitsotakis has requested that Beleri be sworn in, even from his cell, stressing that removing this possibility will cause problems in relations between the two countries.
"I am concerned not only by the fact of the prison, but that even today Albania denies the right to swear to a mayor. I have reported this to the leadership of Albania and I do not interfere in Albanian justice, but this is a violation of the rule of law and creates major problems in bilateral relations that will have wider implications in Albania's attempt to get closer to the EU.
He declared that he will not stop raising this issue in the EU and in front of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
"I will not stop raising this issue at the European level and to Rama himself," said Mr. Mitsotakis.
According to the Greek Prime Minister, this issue reverses the progress achieved in the relationship between the two countries.
"The case casts a shadow over bilateral relations with Albania and overturns the progress we had achieved".
