Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha has confessed a conversation with the former leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha after being declared 'non grata' by the US. While launching the campaign for the leader of the Democratic Party from Elbasan, Berisha said that Basha had submitted to him that if he did not expel him from the Democratic Party, he would have consequences for his children.

Berisha says that he responded by saying that despite the consequences of his decision, he does not accept shame and submission.

"There have been many debates on the position of Sali Berisha and I am convinced that not everyone was clear that this position was absolutely based on love for this country and this nation and that was my strength.
