Diaspora registration for the May 11 parliamentary elections closes. At 00:00, the deadline for diaspora applications closed, marking a total of 294,025 requests from voters outside Albania to vote on May 11.

231,674 requests have been approved by the Central Election Commission, while requests have been rejected for 41,962 voters. Meanwhile, according to data from the CEC, there are 20,465 requests under review, for which the Central Election Commission has 5 days to review them.

The number of rejected voters decreased by 359 people in the last 5 hours alone (42,321 at 6:30 PM, the number of rejected voters is now 41,962). After being informed that they would no longer have an extension to the deadline, immigrants tried again, receiving telephone assistance from the CEC, and completing their applications correctly in the last hours. On the last day of application alone, March 4, 3,071 voters registered. 

The preliminary list with name, surname, county where the vote is going, and state from which the envelope comes, will be published on March 9. Only those who are in the system and have inaccuracies in the register have 48 hours to request changes.

As for the districts where voters from abroad will vote, Tirana has the highest number of approved requests, specifically 49,370 voters. Tirana is also the district that produces the highest number of mandates, a full 37 mandates. Fier is the second district with the highest number of voters from abroad, followed by Durrës, Elbasan, Korça, Vlora, Shkodra, Berat, Lezha, Dibra, Gjirokastra and Kukës.

Thus concludes a historic process that for the first time paves the way for the diaspora to vote in our country. Registration began on January 11 and closed on March 4.

In a last-minute move, the Democratic Party requested today at the CEC to extend the deadline for diaspora registration until March 9, but no agreement was found in the Regulatory Commission. The SP agreed to extend the deadline only for about 42 thousand rejected candidates, to give them the opportunity to apply correctly.

For the May 11 elections, immigrants who have registered with expired cards and passports will also have the opportunity to vote, while the postage for sending the envelope and then returning it to Albania will be free.
