Justice reform is irreversible, says the European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, as he underlines the importance of the independence and integrity of magistrates.
Gozato shared his message held at a roundtable organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Tirana and the Albanian Helsinki Committee, where in his speech, he stated that the European Union will continue to support the vetting process in justice.
"However, trust must be constantly nurtured. It cannot be taken for granted. This means that, while justice reform is irreversible, its implementation requires our continued attention and support. Guaranteeing the independence and integrity of magistrates is a permanent task and a permanent effort," Gonzato says.
The message at the table for justice reform:
Accountability and independence are at the heart of every democratic society governed by the rule of law.
Today, at the roundtable organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands and the Albanian Helsinki Committee, Ambassador Silvio Gonzato joined the discussions on the legacy of the vetting system established by the 2016 justice reform. The reform and with it the vetting aims to restore public trust in the judiciary and its institutions. This is why the EU has supported the vetting process from the beginning and will continue to do so until its conclusion.
