Long-time Socialist Party MP Erion Braçe, newly elected since 1996, said that intentionally or unintentionally, after victory, you become arrogant.
For this reason, Braçe also expressed to News24 that the SP must change itself in the next four years of governance, to have an approach that is as close as possible to serving the people, listening to and solving citizens' problems.
"I don't see what Berisha is saying, I am engaged in our analysis of the elections. I did not expect this result in Unit 5, I expected more votes, despite the fact that we had an increase," said Braçe.
Did you, as a position and the SP, find it easier to win?
Erion Braçe: Our problem is not the opposition, it is ourselves. If we do not correct ourselves and do not have a humble, non-arrogant approach in relation to the people, because in some cases we are arrogant, we cannot improve. From me first, to those who are at the top, sometimes we have an arrogant approach, it comes naturally to you, even though we try to restrain ourselves. But this is not the essence of governance. I think that governance has been cooperative and dedicated and so on, just as there are flaws, which definitely need to be corrected, they should be almost zero in this mandate. This mandate, which was obtained with so many votes, should serve to be increasingly humble, at work and dedicated in the face of problems, even if it concerns a single person. Above all, this mandate should serve to listen a lot and to act even more in relation to the people.
What should the SP change?
Erion Braçe: Yourself. After 12 years in power, it is definitely necessary to change yourself. Not simply and only as individuals, because you can change MPs or party leaders at the central and local levels, you can change mayors, as well as ministers, but it does not change the approach in relation to the people. What needs to change is the approach. Arrogance must go to zero and dedication must go to 100%.
What has the Socialist Party done wrong so far?
Erion Braçe: I would only say what needs to be done better. The fight against corruption needs to be done even better. It is essential that citizens lack public and good services, what they do not deserve is corruption. We have taken a big step and have let justice take its course, we have removed any kind of political shield for every member of the Socialist Party at every level of government and have let them face justice directly if they have a criminal charge. This is an approach that has not existed in Albania before. It is a positive thing that is happening in this country. But, this is only criminal justice, what we are interested in is social justice, which stems directly from the way you exercise power.
How much has SPAK hit your political family?
Erion Braçe: Whatever the degree of our shock, the benefit to the citizens is much greater. We have not created the new justice system simply to hold a minister, a deputy, a president, a prime minister or so on accountable. It is not revenge for those who at different times have sins for the way they have governed and owe debts to the citizens. So, it should be seen as a process where citizens benefit, not a process that shocks the Socialist Party, shocks the Government or so on. We must free ourselves from history, and he was also put in prison. Look at how much public security has benefited from the crackdown on organized crime in Albania.
There are voices that see you in the Government, how are you with the expectations?
Erion Braçe: I have no expectations in this regard, at all. I have made a commitment to the electorate and the priority for me is being a deputy. I will answer to every person in Tirana, because I received 6 thousand votes in the area, while I received another 15 thousand in the entire district. Therefore, I will do my best to answer to those who voted for me. I have said "no" to a proposal of the Prime Minister earlier. Being a minister is a job first and foremost, not as vanity or status above the rest.
I don't become a minister so that people will curse me, to vegetate, to make fun of and so on, not to do the job. When you become a minister, you must have a plan in mind, which fits with what the government wants, what the Prime Minister wants, necessarily accompanied by a budget to support that plan and policies in the service of the people. The government is not a wish list, it cannot be created by the wish of Erjon and others. A work team must be built and that sticks to the job from beginning to end. Having said that, it doesn't start with me, it has to start with someone else.
