Former Mayor of Bogota and candidate for President of Colombia, Enrique Penalosa, has stated that he hopes that the trial of Tirana Mayor, Erion Veliaj, will be fair. In a post on social media, Penalosa says that Veliaj has been held in detention for more than a year and this does not bode well for his trial.
He values Veliaj as a man who did extraordinary work for Tirana and as an important international voice in the urban field,
"I hope that the trial of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj will be fair. Keeping him in detention for more than a year does not bode well for the trial, which has finally begun. All I know is that for nearly 10 years, he did extraordinary work in his city and was an important international leader in the urban field. This process will be followed by many eyes of the international community, with the hope that justice will prevail," Penalosa writes.
