Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke from Luxembourg about the preconditions fulfilled by Albania for the opening of the first chapter of the integration negotiations with the EU or the obligations brought by the process.
Among other things, Rama emphasized that for the first time in our history since Albania became a sovereign state in 1912, we are seeing high-profile investigations and political figures being accused or convicted before an independent court regardless of their ties to the ruling party. or with others.
He said that we will do this by fighting corruption and organized crime at every level, to guarantee the safety of our citizens and to deserve our place at the EU table.
" Albanians cannot have a plan B when it comes to individual freedoms, the rule of law and functional democracy. History has taught us the hard way that this cannot be found or even guaranteed outside the EU sphere. These are the A, B and C of the European way of life. Choosing an alternative to full membership in the EU would be to give up the way of life that we finally chose after enduring dark ages under empires and regimes that were imposed on us ," declared Rama.
He continued: " For us it is not a pro-European rhetoric, it is a matter of life and death for our dream to leave to future generations a country where individual freedom is indisputable, where the rule of law is respected and where democracy works for everyone. The alternatives to this dream are only nightmares of other kinds" .
Rama said that we are here today because Albania has absolutely fulfilled all the prerequisites to start this phase of membership and remains steadfast in its determination to fulfill all future obligations. " We will do this together with our partners through negotiations with clear commitments and through great work. We do it with renewed efforts and to strengthen the achievements made in justice reform by promoting a more transparent, more accountable judicial system. For the first time in our history since Albania became a sovereign state in 1912, we are seeing high-profile investigations and political figures being accused or convicted before an independent court regardless of their ties to the ruling party or others. We will do this also by fighting corruption and organized crime at every level, to guarantee the safety of our citizens and to deserve our place at the EU table ", said the Prime Minister.
He emphasized that our new justice institutions born out of the most comprehensive fundamental justice reform undertaken by a candidate country before joining the EU are making significant progress.
"This progress will only deepen further. We will do this by protecting and preserving human rights of course, in an inclusive society that respects diversity and protects the rights of minority groups by ensuring compliance with European international human rights standards.
We have already implemented a fairly progressive legal framework, based on the standards of the Council of Europe, serving as an example for many others, including countries within the EU, when it comes to the commitment to an inclusive society, where all minorities are equal and equally protected. Our will to live in spirit and letter of this legislation will soon be complemented by by-laws. We will strengthen the functionality of our democratic framework with public administration that is guided by the principles of efficiency, transparency and meritocracy. We will build on the excellent work of a large group of negotiators", said Rama.
He thanked Prime Minister Orbán and his government for showing us, from the first day, the willingness to help pass on the knowledge that Hungary has acquired during its process of rapprochement and subsequent EU membership.
"Thank you for your commitment. Let me conclude by expressing my conviction that every success that Albania achieves for EU integration should be seen as a step forward for the region. The EU needs the Western Balkans. Our countries may be at different stages of the process, but one thing is the same, the desire to be part of this union. For Albania, there is no other future, there is no other path".
