Gonzato "reconciles" the DP and the SP

The EU Ambassador, Silvio Gonzato, held a meeting with the two co-chairs of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform, Damian Gjiknuri and Oerd Bylykbashi, where the focus of the discussions was the progress of the electoral reform and the steps expected to be taken in the coming weeks.

According to Ambassador Gonzato, credible electoral processes in line with international standards remain a key priority on Albania's path towards membership in the European Union.

He stressed the importance of electoral reform to increase transparency in the financing of political parties, to guarantee the independence of the electoral administration, and to prevent the misuse of state resources during campaigns.

In his statement, Gonzato underlined that a broad reform of electoral rules, including the implementation of OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, is essential to guarantee public trust and protect the integrity of future elections.

"Credible electoral processes, in line with international standards, remain a key priority on Albania's path towards EU membership. Yesterday I met with the two co-chairs of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reform, Damian Gjiknuri and Oerd Bylykbashi, to discuss the work of the committee in the coming weeks.

"I underlined the importance of electoral reform to increase transparency in the financing of political parties, to guarantee the independence of the election administration and to prevent the misuse of state resources. A comprehensive reform of electoral rules, including the implementation of OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, is essential to guarantee public trust and protect the integrity of future elections," he wrote.
