Gjiknuri: The future of the region is secure in the European Union
Damian Gjiknuri

The General Secretary of the SP, Damian Gjiknuri, declares that Albania is determined in its choice to be part of the European Union and NATO. Speaking at the conference on "Security Challenges and Reshaping Geopolitics" attended by General James L. Jones, Jr., and many senior political figures, he emphasized that the country of the Western Balkans is in the European family. "I think the recent initiatives for opening, even the Open Balkans initiative, however, it can also have a debate as every new initiative can have a debate, but what is important is the focus and inspiration when it comes from cooperation, openness, strengthening of democracy, maintaining the same values. Ultimately, the goal is for Albania to be a member of the European Union. What is important is how to strengthen the values of the Western world in this country called Europe, and where the Western Balkans should not be seen as set aside. On the contrary, there is the history, there is the perspective, and I say that Albanian politics can very well find itself in this perspective and with this final goal", he declared.

Gjiknuri emphasized that in these difficult times, it is important for western values to prevail. "Yes, there is an element of what the war in Ukraine or the Russian aggression in Ukraine brought about, it is exactly what some started to say, it is the end of that globalization and unlimited democracy that everyone thought would be the future of the world and the beginning of dividing the world into poles based on certain values. On the one hand, there are Western Euro-Atlantic values that we all accept are represented by NATO countries, from the Euro-Atlantic axis, but not everywhere sees it that way and we are looking at a Russia that is getting closer to China. We are looking at another Arab world that was once very much with the United States, but now it will not choose a position, instead it will look at its opportunities to take advantage of this situation. On the contrary, Albania and other small countries are at the crossroads of what choices we will make. The choice is clear, we have chosen to be a country of the European Union, we have chosen to be part of NATO, part of the same security infrastructure. But it is very important that exactly these values prevail in these difficult times".

The General Secretary of the SP underlined that the Russian aggression against Ukraine strengthened the NATO alliance more. "The Russian aggression did one good thing, it strengthened NATO more, changed its strategic concept, put Russia back as one of the main threats and saw China again as a challenger from a strategic point of view. I said it at the beginning, we have a China and a Russia that are getting closer to each other. Then it depends on how strong the European Union will stand in this new positioning of the economic pressures that come from the deepening and prolongation of this war. And I think that for the Western Balkans and for our countries there is one thing, we should cooperate more with each other, not take peace for granted, see that security is not something that stays there. I think that the strengthening of economic relations and the inclusion of this region in the European Union is the only safe future of this the region. There is no democracy without economic development and there is no economic development without exchanging with each other, without opening up to each other, without being at peace, in the region, without being freer and without benefiting from the cooperation we should have with Europe ", emphasized Gjiknuri.
