The former Italian Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, says that Europe needs a peace pact, but the obstacle to achieving it is the internal divisions it has.
In an interview for Avvenire , Prodi says that peace is made by the big ones and at this point, the role of the US and China is irreplaceable.
"I may sound monotonous, but I don't want to change one syllable of what I've said from the beginning: it wouldn't be possible without an agreement between the United States and China, and that's how it is today. We must accept that the king is naked and take into account the American and Chinese supremacy in the world: peace is made by those in charge".
Prodi says that everyone is interested in peace and it should never be seen as surrender or a pact with the devil.
"Peace always has its value in history. One of the mistakes made so far has been associating this word with some kind of pact with the devil. There has even been an attempt to call those who talk about peace naive. Our goal should be to reflect on what are the conditions for a possible, just and lasting peace".
The former head of the European Commission says that the old continent must give a definitive structure to its borders. Prodi emphasizes the Balkan countries as part of Europe and the need for an institutional reform of the Union, while emphasizing that he does not understand why France in the recent past has blocked the negotiations for the membership of Albania and North Macedonia in the European Union.
"Since 2002, I have insisted on what I defined as a "ring of friendly countries" to be created with all neighboring countries, which can negotiate bilateral agreements with the Union, different from each other, to increase their individual role in a neighborhood policy that guarantees stability. Europe must be different from other world powers precisely because of the diversity of history through which we have been formed, as we have already gone through two very tragic wars. This is the reason why I do not understand why France in the recent past has blocked the negotiations for the membership of Albania and North Macedonia in the European Union. We have the need, which can no longer be postponed, to equip ourselves with a real common foreign and defense policy. However, it is possible to do as with the euro,
Prodi stops further at France, as a "node" that hinders the evolution of the European process. He envisages a Europe run only by Germany.
"All this could be done in one day if only France would make available to Europe the nuclear weapon and the right of veto in the UN Security Council. On the contrary, it does not, remaining alone in the face of growing troubles with the African countries of the former empire.
Europe must equip itself for a future role. Germany's historic, momentous rearmament will forever change the nature of our continent, which until now has been driven by the Franco-German engine with a not-so-marginal role – after all – of Italy. "Bon gré" or "mal gré", at this rate Europe will have a single leader in the future: Germany. The UK cannot be, having left and now regretting Brexit. And France can no longer be. I am reminded of that old definition of former empires as a driver who drives by looking only in the rear-view mirror…”.
