Centrist Democrat International (IDC-CDI) is one of the largest global center-right political organizations.
With a history of over half a century and an active presence on four continents, this organization strives to play an important role in developing democratic policies, protecting human rights, and promoting economies built on social responsibility.
IDC-CDI and the figures in the leadership of the organization
At the last Assembly held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, former Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha was elected Vice President of the IDC-CDI. This is one of the highest leadership positions in the organization, which currently has 17 Vice Presidents from different countries around the world.
At this meeting, former Colombian President Andres Pastrana Arango was also re-elected as president of the organization, while Antonio Lopez-Isturiz from the Spanish People's Party was confirmed as secretary general.
Also in the Presidency from Europe are Croatian Prime Minister Andrey Plenkovic, incoming Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, and Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban.
The IDC-CDI was founded in 1960 (initially under the name World Union of Christian Democrats) and today includes 115 political parties from 82 countries.
It operates through regional networks spanning:
-Europe
-Latin America
-Africa
-Asia-Pacific region
As part of its structure, the organization also has a special youth forum that promotes the political involvement of young people.
According to its official website, the principles of the IDC-CDI are based on Christian or integral humanism, focusing on human dignity, respect for fundamental rights, peace, justice and the building of sustainable societies. The organization also enjoys consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Plenkovic, also re-elected to the same post, stated that the IDC-CDI is a forum where Christian Democratic and center-right parties coordinate political responses to global challenges, from international security to energy and geopolitical crises.
The election of the former Albanian Prime Minister comes at a time of high political tension in Albania, but also at a difficult legal time for Berisha, due to the legal process against him regarding the “Partizani” dossier. IDC-CDI has been among the first international forums to support the Democratic Party in its accusations of irregularities in the May 11 elections.
In fact, just a few hours after Berisha was confirmed as vice president, the IDC-CDI Assembly adopted a special resolution (read here) on the regression of democracy in Albania, raising concerns about political freedoms and institutional developments in the country.
IDC-CDI is also known for its historic work in defense of democratic activists in authoritarian countries. The organization has intervened in sensitive international cases, such as the deaths of Cuban dissidents Oswaldo Paya and Harold Cepero, demanding independent investigations and respect for human rights.
