The Ambassador of the EU Delegation in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, calls the attacks against SPAK intolerable.

During an interview for Top Channel, he says that the results of SPAK are the only thing that have influenced the integration of Albania.

Excerpt from the interview:

Journalist: Ambassador, you rightly said earlier that you do not comment on individual cases of the justice system in Albania. But how do you see the latest result of the Special Prosecutor's Office, at the same time the continuous attacks on the head of this institution, Mr. Altin Dumani?

Ambassador:  So you know I don't comment, so why are you asking me to comment? But no, I'm kidding. I will not comment. The only thing I can say is that if there is one factor that has influenced the evaluation of the situation in the rule of law sector by the European Union, it is precisely the results that SPAK is achieving. And as I said, I think we should let SPAK work.

We absolutely must not tolerate personal attacks against some of the representatives of these independent justice institutions. We must protect them. And that's definitely my position on that.

Journalist: I was told that during a meeting with donors and the head of SPAK, Mr. Altin Dumani, you said, I quote: "SPAK is playing a key and decisive role for Albania's EU membership". Could you please elaborate a little further on your statement regarding this?

Ambassador:  Yes, it is quite clear that one of the requirements coming from the EU is to have a solid track record in terms of prosecuting high-level corruption cases here in Albania. And the fact that SPAK has started to do this is absolutely a positive sign. It is a sign that the reform is working and bearing its fruits.
