Lawyer Spartak Ngjela, has narrated an episode from several decades ago with the former prime minister and leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, who is currently in a serious state of health admitted to a private hospital in Tirana.

Njjela said that during the time when Nano was in prison, they had met by chance, as the latter, according to him, was in good shape and in a good mood, as they had talked about common things together.

Njela said during an interview for "News24" that during the 1997 riots, when he served as Minister of Justice, he was informed that there would be an assassination attempt on Nano in the cell where the latter was held.

Njjela further revealed that upon receiving this information he had ordered the prisons to be opened, with Nano having initially refused to escape. He had then sent an official car to take Nano from the cell and avoid the murder.

"When the SP was created, I did not believe that it came from the labor party. I knew Nano as an intellectual, but I did not know his political strength. That's where it came out for the first time. He removed all the leaders and turned the party into a socialist one from the Labor Party. I followed him closely at the time and there was a lot of optimism on the left, but then he was put in jail. I met him in prison during another investigation.

We talked about trivial things, he was in shape and we joked. Then came the war. When the war came, I took him by car because they wanted to kill him in 1997. I gave him the car, I told them to send him home. It was a state car. I opened the prisons because they would kill this. They informed me that they would kill him. I opened the prisons, I didn't cut his head at all, but this one didn't come out after that. He considered it an escape and he was right. After that, he returned until he got his own revenge", said Ngjela.
