The US deputy assistant secretary and envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, in an interview for the Top Story show during his visit to Albania two days before the start of the electoral campaign, expressed support for the Open Balkans initiative.
According to the diplomat, this is one of our country's efforts to integrate closer to its neighbors and to the European Union.
"The trade relationship is really on the right track," Escobar emphasized, while adding that "the trade between the United States and Albania is flourishing and growing significantly every year."
Grida Duma: We are grateful to you for that. Meanwhile, American investors are not at that standard or that level that we would like to see as signs of economic well-being and signs of a safe Albania with continued political stability. Is this because American investors do not see interest, high interest in Albania? Or because the Albanian government has not created, let's say, the appropriate guarantees and standards to welcome, invite and encourage American investments in Albania?
Deputy Assistant Secretary Escobar:Quite the opposite. I think trade between the United States and Albania is booming. It is growing significantly every year. I think that Albanian exports to the United States have tripled in the last year. Tripled. And American investment in the region, especially in the energy sector, has increased significantly. We support the Open Balkans initiative, we support your efforts to integrate closer to your neighbors and to the European Union. We notice many positive things. Now, there are still things you can do that would help improve the investment climate, especially with regard to commercial courts and the independence of the judiciary. But right now, the relationship, the trade relationship is really on track and we see important things happening between the United States and Albania.
Grida Duma: Glad to have this message from you, because this is a fact, not a perception.
Deputy Assistant Secretary Escobar: That's right.
