'Debate' at the European Affairs Committee/ Tabaku: We cannot behave
Committee on European Affairs

Today's meeting of the Committee on European Affairs is examining the draft negotiating position for the fourth chapter group "Green Agenda and Sustainable Connectivity" for negotiations with the EU. Two days ago, the Polish EU presidency asked the Albanian government to present its negotiating position for this chapter group, which will be presented at the next intergovernmental conference.

DP MP, also chairwoman of this committee, Jorida Tabaku, was critical of the government on May 11, saying that the path towards the EU cannot be a facade that ignores democratic standards.

" We are discussing the group of Chapter 4, which is very important for the environment, energy and connectivity, but we cannot ignore the fact that we have just emerged from an electoral process with deep problems. This is the fundamental chapter, that of elections and the rule of law. And unfortunately, the democratic test failed, " said Tabaku.

According to her, we cannot behave like Europeans in Brussels and Albanians in Tirana.

" We cannot behave as Europeans in Brussels and as Albanians in Tirana. We cannot sign chapters on paper when we are closing our eyes to the deformation of the will of the citizens, " Tabaku added.

This brought the reaction of Mimi Kodheli, who said that this commission should discuss other issues and not engage in politics. According to her, there are other instances where political concerns can be addressed.

" I believe, with respect to the colleagues present, that the meeting of the European Affairs Committee is a meeting where the government comes with some papers and the members discuss, propose and draft the respective changes that are ultimately guaranteed. We have enough platforms to make our political comments outside of this committee, where we can express our political opinions, since the elections and their spectacular result. For this, I must thank, since we are discussing politically, every citizen of the republic who has convincingly voted for the force that leads the country today. There is a big discussion taking place on the electoral code and the way in which citizens express their will through democratic voting ," said Kodheli.
