The Foreign Minister in Greece, Georgios Gerapetritis in his speech to the parliament presented the aspects of the country's foreign policy in the next four years.
Regarding the countries of the Western Balkans, he said that there are many challenges ahead and that the dangers that exist are multiple, while nationalisms affect the security of the region and undermine the European perspective of these countries.
"Greece, he said, remains committed to the development, security and prosperity of the Western Balkans, and 20 years after the Thessaloniki Summit, it will continue to undertake initiatives to accelerate the European path of the Balkan countries. Especially in relation to Albania - Gerapetritis emphasized - we will do everything necessary to end the temporary ban of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleris. Albania must respect the rules of the rule of law if it really wants to become a member of the European family".
Then the new foreign minister, one of the most trusted people of Prime Minister Mitsotakis, has declared that the Greek foreign policy will be a multimodal policy. On the one hand, it will include all modern forms of diplomacy, such as public diplomacy, which is concerned with the country's image in the world, and on the other hand, it will use any means that can highlight national positions.
"We will continue to support Ukraine, hoping for a quick end to the armed conflict and the full restoration of its territorial integrity. Greece will continue to support the Republic of Cyprus with the aim of finding a solution to its problem based on the resolutions of the United Nations. We will also continue to invest in regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean with Cyprus and Israel, with an emphasis on the energy sector, as the central axis of our regional policy, but also in relations with Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf countries, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab Emirates, both bilaterally and through regional cooperation schemes. The participation of the USA in the 3+1 scheme can be the basis for a new security architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean", said the head of Greek diplomacy.
"For our relations with Turkey - declared Gerapetritis - the compass remains respect for international law and the practical disposition of cooperation and dialogue. Our country seeks to resolve, based on the International Law of the Sea, the only difference between our two countries, the definition of the EEZ and the continental shelf, exactly according to the model of the agreements we have already made with Italy, Egypt and we hope soon with Albania . Continuing to postpone these issues into the future does not work in the best interests of either country. We will approach this dialogue with the confidence that our strengthened diplomatic position in the international environment gives us".
It is worth noting that the minister's statements regarding the definition of the EEZ for the solution based on the model that was found with Italy and Egypt, with reduced influence from the islands on the maritime borders, have been criticized in the parliament by the far-right parties.
