The lawyers of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, held a media conference today regarding the Beleri case.
The matter in question has been set by GJKKO on March 5. Athanasios Zupas, the president of the bar association of Patras and a member of the plenary assembly of the bar of Greece, stated during his speech that the presumption of innocence was not respected in the "Beleri" case.
" Our presence here was made after the election of Mr. Beleri and while he was announced as mayor by the Civil Court. I hear his detention violating his right to be presumed innocent.
Since the presumption of innocence is a basic principle and as in any case, in any EU country if something like this happened, where a mayor would do an act that would then be punishable, in this particular case we saw that the presumption of innocence does not has been respected in the case of our defendant.
We have noticed that there are other cases that enjoy a different treatment and this is something that should not happen because this is a violation of equality in law. We have come to monitor the trial of Mr. Beleri, who has two citizenships ," said the Greek lawyer.
