Tirana welcomes the EU-Western Balkans summit

Tirana will host this Thursday the Regional Summit on the Growth and Convergence Plan with a focus on the integration of the Western Balkans towards the European Union, after the one held in Ukraine the day before.

This summit will also provide new opportunities for an exchange of views on the European future of the region and on common regional challenges. The EU plan for the Western Balkans aims at the economic growth of the region, the acceleration of appropriate reforms, and the making of investments that can advance the process of EU enlargement with these countries.

The EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood, Oliver Varhelyi, will be present at the summit.

Unlike the summit for Ukraine, where President Vjosa Osmani was present from Kosovo, there will be no representative today. On the other hand, Serbian President Aleksandër Vucic will be present.

For the first time as Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi will also be present at the summit.

The Western Balkans Enlargement Plan is based on 4 main pillars.

- Increasing economic integration with the Single Market of the European Union.

- Increasing economic integration within the Western Balkans through the Common Regional Market.

-Acceleration of fundamental reforms

-Increasing financial aid

The EU will open certain areas of the EU common market to Western Balkan partners before accession, bringing tangible benefits to its citizens.
